Steve Gelsi is adept at helping ABS clients to identify the data required, extract it and, if required, analyse it.

“Every set of numbers has a story to tell,” he says. He sees his role as assisting clients to tell these stories, while maintaining statistical rigour.

For Community Indicators Victoria (CIV), Steve is helping to bring together the various data sets that will  make up the frameworks of indicators, building on the work done previously by the ABS.

As part of the ABS’s Information Consultancy Unit, Steve has been outposted to a number of State Government departments. As in his previous placements, at CIV Steve is helping staff understand how to use (and not use) statistics and to maintain the required exactitude.

The CIV data is being drawn from a very diverse range of sources, including the ABS. An important part of the ABS’s role is also to coordinate the data dissemination, to help ensure that the public hears the stories behind the numbers.
